Reviving Landscapes Through Community Stewardship

We combine technology and farmer engagement to restore forests and improve rural livelihoods.

Our Story

Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFU) is a locally registered non-profit organization advancing reforestation, agroforestry, and sustainable value chains to build resilient communities and restore degraded landscapes. Established by the former Uganda country team of Fairventures Worldwide (FVW). GFU officially took over project implementation on 1st August 2025, marking a transition to strong local ownership and leadership. Today, GFU addresses the growing challenge of deforestation driven by rising demand for fuelwood, timber, and farmland, working with smallholder farmers across Uganda to create thriving forests, improve livelihoods, and secure a sustainable environment.

Our Approach

At Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFU), we believe that sustainable forest restoration requires more than just planting trees; it demands a holistic approach that integrates ecological health, social empowerment, and economic opportunities. Our work is designed to respond to the specific environmental and socio-economic challenges in Uganda, where forest degradation, population pressures, and unsustainable land use threaten both biodiversity and livelihoods.

Our Focus Areas

We work closely with smallholder farmers and local communities to restore landscapes and improve livelihoods through practical and community led approaches. Our work delivers both environmental restoration and long-term economic impacts.

Farmer Livelihoods

We support smallholder farmers by integrating sustainable income-generating crops into restoration programmes. Through agroforestry, we promote cocoa, Hass avocado, and coffee to provide reliable midterm income while improving land productivity.

With training and climate-smart farming practices, farmers diversify income sources, strengthen resilience and actively participate in landscape restoration ensuring both environmental and economic impacts.

Assisted Natural Regeneration

We use natural regeneration as one of the approaches to restore degraded land by supporting the natural recovery of vegetation from the tree stumps in targeted areas.

Naturally regenerating zones are identified and protected from disturbance such as illegal timber harvesting and unnecessary clearing. These practices support the gradual restoration of vegetation cover, leading to improved soil health, increased biodiversity, better water retention and stronger ecosystem resilience in a cost-effective way.

Tree planting & digital single tree monitoring

Together with farmers, we restore degraded landscapes through sustainable tree planting initiatives that support biodiversity and climate resilience ecosystems. We use high-quality tree seedlings sourced from our nurseries and partner nurseries to ensure a strong survival  rate in the fields.

Each tree planted is tracked using the TREEO app, which enables real-time monitoring of survival rates, growth, and restoration progress. This data-driven approach strengthens transparency, accountability and effective decision-making. By involving farmers and communities throughout the process, we build ownership and ensure long-term stewardship of restored landscapes.
